Ringtones are musical melodies frequently used on cellphones. The notes playing in various combinations give mobiles distinct sounds. The sounds often indicate an incoming call or a cell phone alarm alerting. Ringtones have become increasingly popular in Europe and now many popular songs have been converted from midi files to the RTTL format for cellphones.

Nextel Phones - as of july 2002, none of their phones (manufactured by Motorola) can accept keypress or downloadable ringtones. The latest Nextel iDEN phones developped by Motorola do offer nice downloadable stuff such as Java games and applications, but for some reason, Motorola developers elected not to include the melody composer found on most of their new CDMA, TDMA and GSM cell phones. Its likely future Nextel phones will support ringtones; if you have a new Nextel handset check with your Nextel dealer to determine whether ringtones are supported. (Also check the Motorola chart)
